I am sure you will agree that the world is making great strides in becoming more accessible to those who have a disability. In many ways, accessibility seems to have become the norm. You would be hard pressed to find a street to work down or a building to enter, where accessibility has not been thought of at least in some way. But we can always ask, is there more we can do? People may feel happy that ramps have been added to a building, or disabled toilets on every level with additional equipment in them but is this all that is needed? Disabilities come in many different ways and while some of those with disabilities will benefit from a ramp, a disabled toilet, or the additional equipment therein, there are many with disabilities that need none of these things but might require consideration in other areas.
Unfortunately, disabled people are still having to fight to be heard in some of these areas and it is an ongoing battle. But there is good news. Firstly, governments are acknowledging the difficulties faced by disabled people in trying to have the access they’re entitled to as members of society. They deserve equal access to everybody else and as this is being noted, legislation is coming out in many countries to support disabled people in this regard. In fact, governments are seriously clamping down on issues involving the disabled to make sure they are treated equally and because of the additional assistance that businesses need there are now companies like accessiBe around to help.
But it still seems to be the way of the world that, perhaps unintentionally, disabilities, or the needs of those living with them, can sometimes go unnoticed or unconsidered. As we said earlier, people may see a ramp and think the disabled have been considered and helped in that building. But there is so much more to consider. One area that seems to get missed more than most is the online world. Now again, ignorance may lead some to assume that the very existence of the internet is helpful to the disabled and no more is needed. But being unable to access websites has been a source of much frustration and feelings of being pushed out for many of those living with disabilities.
There are many ways to make a website more accessible. So many, in fact, that a number of those companies with websites, feel it must be too big a task to take on so instead do nothing about it. Now for the second bit of good news. There is software available that will do all the work for you. And there are people who can install the software for you. It is cheap and fast and can get your website accessible in a matter of days.
